Technical Editing Services

As a scientist and engineer, technical writing and editing are a daily

part of my professional career. I apply the same level of detail to quilt

pattern writing and editing. I've written over 200 quilt patterns

and edited countless others. My passion is helping you make sure your

pattern is as good as it can be.

I offer a la carte technical editing, graphics/template drafting, and pattern

writing services. Wherever your pattern is at, I can help you get it to a

finished and polished state. Rates and typical charges are below for

each kind of service but additional sizes and pattern complexity can

change these approximates quite a bit.

I've worked with Carli on many projects and keep coming back for her attention to detail, thorough feedback, and timeliness.  Her industry knowledge really shows and I learn something new from her suggestions every time she tech edits a pattern for me.  I also find her Tech Tip Tuesdays on YouTube really insightful and appreciate that she openly shares her knowledge to help designers put out the best patterns they can!  I would highly recommend Carli to any fellow pattern writers who are looking for a tech editor.

Carli’s technical editing gives me peace of mind knowing her detailed review ensures accurate patterns for my customers. I appreciate her willingness to also educate and offer additional tools to enhance my quilt patterns. I highly recommend her services.

Here is where you can ask technical questions that come up as you are working on a quilt pattern. Anyone who wants to learn (tech editing client or not) is welcome and I'll be in there answering questions whenever they're asked.

Technical Editing

Technical editing provides a complete review of your pattern draft. Below is a list of areas I specifically look at during a technical review.

  1. Clarity of written instructions

  2. Fabric requirements, block dimensions, and quilt math

  3. Graphics and instructional diagrams

  4. Cutting instructions

  5. Construction workflow

  6. Overall organization

Turnaround is currently 3-7 days but rush turnaround is available for an additional fee.

Pattern Ghost Writing

Have designs but don't want to write the pattern? Outsource your pattern writing to me. I'm happy to work with everything from a paper-sketched design to a partially drafted pattern and you retain all rights and authorship to your pattern.

Turnaround time for completed drafts is currently guaranteed to within 4 weeks. Rush service is available. Please inquire for more information. I can provide detailed estimates based on your specific design upon request.

I do recommend having an independent technical editor review your finalized pattern draft as well, since I can not adequately edit my own work. I use EQ8, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign to draft patterns.

Al la carte Design Services

If what you're looking for doesn't exactly fit into either of the above categories, please reach out. I'm always happy to help with individual steps of the pattern writing process. Examples of this include (but aren't limited to):

  1. Design Consultation - For when you want an experienced opinion about best approach for sewing non-standard shapes in a quilt pattern.

  2. Paper Template Drafting - For when you're not confident that you can draw a paper pattern piece to the accurate size/shape for your pattern.

  3. Pattern Illustration - For when you just need help with the graphics. You write the steps, I'll fill in all or some of the pictures.

  4. Pattern Formatting - For when you're ready to convert a digital pattern to a paper format or need a pattern converted into a standardized format.
